Catherine Brown

Catherine's artistic journey began with large scale metal sculptures, but the costs involved in establishing her own sculpture studio soon prompted her to seek out creativity on a smaller scale. Enter jewellery making.

Over the past 20 years her tools have followed her across continents and her creative style and sensibilities have been shaped while experiencing life in a handful of cities.

Today Catherine crafts her handmade jewellery from her home studio in Brisbane and runs workshops for aspiring jewellery makers.

My creative space is…

my garage converted into a studio. The space is never as tidy or refined as I would like, but I love it all the same. I’m currently sharing it with a possum who clearly loves it as much as I do.

My art is unique because…

I like to think I manage to bring an element of the organic to jewellery, which is hopefully an interesting point of difference from traditional jewellery, which is a lot more structured and refined.

Inspiration for my art comes from…

everywhere, but at the moment I am completely fascinated with sacred geometry within nature.

The last piece I created is…

a spinner ring to use as a demonstration for a series of upcoming workshops I am running for students.

My favourite tool for creating is…

my stone setting tools and my new universal work holder.

My art has taught me…

that beauty is everywhere, but sometimes it requires focusing on the tiniest of details to find it.

My biggest artistic challenge is…

finding time to create everything I want to. I have so many ideas and pieces taking shape in my mind all the time. It is often difficult to focus on one idea in order to bring it to fruition.
